The Temple of Virgin
Mary is located in the village of New
Iraklitsa of Kavala. In a splendid
location that combines the blue sea but
also the Greek mountains the visitor can
admire the natural beauty and also
explore the beautiful parts of a region
with appreciable archaeological places,
including the apostolic step of saint
Apostle Pavlos and the ancient Christian
baptistery of Saint Lydias and many
others.
The Temple in New Iraklitsa was
erected in the year 1956 with the
supervision of the local Vicar, Michael
Theodorides, playing a leading part in
the construction. The belltower was
added in the year 2002. The Temple was
inaugurated on 20 January 2002 by the
Metropolite of Eleftheroupolis in the
name of
Virgin
Mary “Revealing”, Saint George and Saint
Haralampous.
The latter of which has part of his
cranium as a holy relic inside the
church, which is looked after with the
remainder heirlooms of
Eastern Thrace. From
2002, with the efforts of the Head of
Church Thomas Andreou and collaborators,
the Temple has been renovated. This
process included repairing and restoring
the inside and outside of the building,
taking care of the precious relics,
which were encased in glass display
cabinets, and replacing the old and
damaged pews. The altar was also
replaced by a new one carved out of
wood.
